As I see other reviews, this one should be no surprise that this one is another one about awful customer service. On a recent trip to the big island of Hawaii we made the mistake of renting from dollar at the Kona airport. Our nightmare started with the incredible wait to get our car. As I'm now gathering, this was no isolated incident of having to wait 2 1/2-3 hours to get our car along with 50+ people in the blistering sun. No one apologized for the delay and if we, like many others who had made the mistake of prepaying, we would have gone across the stress and rented from Avis or hertz but unfortunately we could not do that. Our nightmare continued as we traveled around the island only to find the car had transmission issues. We were lucky to be able to make it to Hilo where a wonderful man named junior took our information and was able to give us another car. To his credit, he was so good at customer service, when he realized my husband was a veteran, he too was one and thanked him for his service. Thinking all was now good, we headed back to our hotel in Kona only to find the tire pressure light came on as we were driving back on a highway with no service stations. While not dollar's fault we had difficulty in finding a station with a working air pump which added to our frustration. So a couple of things are very clear after this experience. Dollar doesn't maintain its vehicles and as we now know as soon as they are returned, they put right back out without anyone looking at them for any issues. In fact when we returned the car, no one asked about how things went or even checked to see if there were any dents. My husband and I have rented cars for years and no place has ever been so ignorant in customer service or vehicle maintainance and not even caring that they are. We will NEVER rent from dollar again and I have left reviews on TripAdvisor and yelp about this horrible company. And most important, NEVER rent from them in Kona as it will start your vacation on a sour note.

I've tried to resolve this issue....I've been promised dollar rental in charlotte would getin touch with me..which, they haven't...my name is jeff mcmanus, I rented a car from dollar, i stressed I did not want any extra ins, however, i was still charged...this is the last time I will attempt to get a refund....if I'm not contacted by the end of today, I will be fileing a complalnt with the BBB. Enough is Enough...I rented the car thru priceline, stressing, i did not want any extras...I went to pick the car up, I AGAIN stressed i did not need any extras....however, i was charged for the extras totaling 149.00.....for the last time, my name is Jeff McManus, I rented the car from dollar in charlotte, nc at the airport...the dates where 1/21/23 to 1/23/23...rental record # 127520035 AND rental record # 126243541 unfortunately, when I told the lady at the counter that i didn't want any extras, I didn't check behind her,, If I had, I would have seen she signed me up anyway....my fault for trusting her...like i said, i've been trying to resolve this, but i've continually been given the run around...If i'm not contacted by the end of the day today, I will be lodgeing a complaint with the BBB and priceline to advise them of the way you do business.

Question, why is it when you have a vehicle reservation you still have to wait a long time before receiving the vehicle? Also they offer no accommodations for waiting, no water unless you pay $2.00. My experience was far from satisfying. I'd give a 3 out of 10 rating.

I will never rent from Dollar again. Horrible customer service. We were early picking up our car without realizing it so they charged me another 463. Without even saying anything. I saw it and said something they told me oh well it changed all your rates wouldn't do anything for me. Dollar sucks!

My Husband & I have been loyal Dollar Car Rental customers for many years (we are both Dollar Express Members) We flew into Tampa on Dec 28, 2020. We had rented a SUV using our Dollar Express membership, when we arrived at the car rental site the Dollar/Thrifty counter was closed, there was a sign directing us to the Hertz counter. We were greeted by a Hertz employee who asked who we had rented thru, I told her Dollar, she then directed us to a line for Dollar & Thrifty with about 15 to 20 people in line. I told her we were Dollar Express members, she said unfortunately because the Dollar counter was closed there was nothing she could do. We stood in line for 2 hours, watching the Hertz members go directly to get there cars (like we expected to do with Dollar because of our membership) and the other Hertz customer move quickly thru the Hertz line. There was 1 person helping the Hertz customers and 1 person helping both Dollar & Thrifty customers. Dollar knew how many customers had reserved cars, and what time they would be arriving, closing the counter with no warning to your customers is extremely poor customer service. I do not think we will ever rent with Dollar, Hertz or Thrifty, I would be too concerned about what type of service we would arrive to find (another closed counter??) The only good thing I can say about your customer service is your employees were very professional when placed in a very bad situation, with many angry customers

If there was a really bad service in any car rental company anywhere in the country, this would be the worst. That's because of rude, obnoxious , prejudice people like June at the Dollar Rent a Car counter in Tampa. Not only did she treat me like an animal, but from her counter to way across to the other counter where a gentleman was taking care of a customer with Thrifty, and in front of a line of customers that were waiting in line, she yelled for everyone to hear "He wants to pay with a debit card and wants to talk to a supervisor" I have never been so humiliated and treated with such poor service, blurting out loud my information for everyone to hear, and to top it off, called for next in line as to trying to brush me off. I have rented many vehicles from many different companies and I have never been treated this way ever. People like this should not deal with customers at all. I will never use Dollar rent a car ever again and will let as many people as I can know how terrible this person can be. It is sad that Dollar Rent A Car , being a reputable company has people like June working for them. Even her coworkers told me , she is a very rude person.

I would like to tell you about my experience renting a car form your dollar rent a car in houston iah airport on oct 23 - 26 2019 Res # J1302478364. I went to the counter to pick up my car. The agent was not very helpful at all. All he did was try to run up my bill with extra charges. I finally got to the car. They told me to pick from a few. I picked the Toyota rav. It looked great in the shade. After close inspection.I noticed all the dents ect. it wasen't clean inside & it smelled . After driving it i noticed the dashboard light would keep saying to not drive this car it needed servicing of some kind. I was actually afraid to drive the car to see my 93 year old mother that is why i rented the car.. The car did make it to see my mother. When i went to return the car. The agent said something about the car but i was in a hurry to catch the shuttle to the airport. After getting home i was informed that i was charged some kind of fee for smoking in the car, It stated that i has informed about this smoking rule. No ware did i see any signs on the rental agreement or on the key fob or in the car it'self. I really feel that i should be refunded for all these prob's & for this charge for smoking $300.00. I was never informed that this was a non smoking car until your charge. I was thinking about another trip to houston but im afraid i will have to look elsewhere for my car rental needs. Rented from dollar at Orlando Airport. Reservation was for total of $298.00. Part of that was charged before we got to rental. After dropping off we noticed they had charged us $344.00. Called to find out not only did they charge us $298.00 but added that $344.00. Cost of car over $500.00. Getting run around from Company. Was told they would credit the $344.00 but it went on charge day after conversation. Don't trust them!!

I went to Tampa international airport yesterday to rent a car from Dollar rent a car was greeted friendly but the moment I said that I was going to have to use my debit card as per the Dave Ramsey show I was treated like I had the plague and was I was very rudely and adamantly told you cannot use your debit card and totally ignored after that. After being treated so rudely I went to another salesperson to ask to speak to a manager or supervisor and the sales person that I just left yelled down to the other sales rep she has a debit card again like I had the plague.

On the 6th of this month, my wife and I called to rent a car from Dollar Rent-a-car. We were told that our confirmation number would come in an email, and that we could pick up the car at the scheduled date.
We called the night before to see if we could pick up the car earlier than planned, and we were told there was no reservation in our name. We then checked our email for the confirmation number, but we hadn't received an email from them.
We had to reserve a car through another company which nearly triple the cost.
Once we returned home, we realized that Dollar HAD taken out the money for the rental we never received, nor received a confirmation number,
So we called customer service and were hung up on by the first two customer service agents. The third decided to play phone tag with different representatives, and even another company.
The fourth agent sent us back through the loop, and when we requested the corporate number; we were given the run-a-round.
We are currently on agent six, and are getting no where fast.
We called our bank to file a complaint for fraud, and our next stop is to the Better Business Bureau.
I hope that anyone considering renting from Dollar/Hertz will se these complaints and take their business elsewhere.

SCAM. There should be a class action lawsuit against them. Never ever for any reason rent from Dollar or Hertz.
They are deceitful, unconscionable, greedy ripoff artists. Shame on them and their dishonest price gouging. They are what's wrong with American Business. They are a prime example maybe the best of it

My husband and I arrived at Sacramento airport Dollar Rental around 4:30PM- to pick up the car we reserved on 9/13/17. We were on our way to our baby moon in San Diego the next morning. I'm currently pregnant and only 24 weeks at this time, but I started to have a leakage in my water, so my doctor recommended we go to the hospital ASAP. This was literally right after we received the rental car.

Upon getting to the hospital, we were informed I was in preterm high risk labor, and that I would need to stay in the hospital for the remainder of my pregnancy on bed rest. By the time we were processed through to high risk maternity, we tried contacting the Dollar Rental Sacramento airport location, but it was fairly late in the evening, so we called back first thing the next morning on 9/14/17.

We informed the Dollar Rental employee of my situation, and the doctor even agreed to write a letter from the hospital- but the employee declined the offer multiple times. We informed them my husband would need to return the car right away, and we would gladly pay for one day of rental fees (9/13/17-9/14/17). However, we were shockingly told we were going to be charged a ridiculous $208.19 for one day! This is horrific! Especially since our total weekly rate would have only been $283.29- from 9/13/17-9/18/17.

The Dollar Rental employee didn't seem to care about our situation, or that I was even in the hospital, and charged us $208.19 no matter what!

It's extremely disappointing and horrible customer service and business practices- for your employee and company to charge someone in our unavoidable situation, $208.19 for having a car for one day.

I'm highly disappointed with Dollar Rental and feel your company has made an already traumatic situation even more stressful!

I have already had an extensive twitter discussion to no avail. My family rented a van so we could stay together evacuating IRMA. The van had problems and your company lied and put us through hoops. I can't even type this out all over again. I am going attempt to reach your company President or go straight to Hertz. I am still considering complaining to the state attorney generals of the four states we travelled and to the media. Nothing like taking advantage of Irma evacuees.

I received the rudest most arrogant service from your Anchorage Airport office. The person who attended to me should be sacked immediately. He ended up costing me an extra $1500 for 3 days hire of a dirty presented Corolla car on my Alaskan holiday. I am presently compiling a complaint to be sent by mail to Oklahoma City with all the relevant details The Rental Agreement was Y19938402 07/08/2017 Emp # 11012. I made a pre-paid reservation for a car; pick-up in Guatemala City at the airport. When I arrived, with the confirmation in hand, there was no one at the counter. I waited for 45 minutes, then reluctantly took a car from another agency as I had reservations out of town. I was never refunded the money. The other agency charged me a LOT more for a car.

Terrible customer service ---- BAIT and SWTICH tactics. We made a reservation online to rent a vehicle for one week as we needed a 4=wheel drive (or all wheel drive) for a trip to the mountains. Received our confirmation number and drove to the Oakland Airport to pickup our vehicle. When we arrived, the agent stated they did not have any left in the mid-size which we reserved. Instead, they had a full-size for $200 more.

We went to another company at the airport to rent our vehicle, but VERY VERY disappointed at not honoring their reservation.

I reserved a Dollar Rent a Car to be picked up at the Tampa airport at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3 and return it to the same location on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2016. My reservation After standing in the Dollar rent a car line for well over 45 minutes I finally made it to the Dollar counter and after giving the Dollar employee my information to rent a car she informed me that they had no cars available and I would have to wait until a customer returned their Dollar rent a car. Did not realize until then that all the people in front of me were also now in line waiting for Dollar customers to return their Dollar rent a car. She said my wait could be between 30 minutes to 1:30 depending on when cars start coming back. Meanwhile, the line behind me at the Dollar Rent a Car was growing and would soon find out their wait had just begun. I noticed not one other Dollar rent a car competitor had a line of people looking to rent a car from them. In fact, none of them had a single person in line and as I found out later none of them had a car available to rent. Obviously, they were able to contact anyone that may have had reservations for a car due to the recent weather problems to make sure they did not have their customers frustrated as many Dollar patrons were on this Saturday afternoon. Meanwhile, since I was already going to be late for the wedding I came to St. Petersburg via Tampa airport to attend, I decided to call a friend in St. Pete to have him leave the wedding and pick me up at the Tampa Airport. My wife and I were planning to stay in the Tampa area until Tuesday, but since we did not have the rent a car from Dollar to use while in the area we decided it would be best to just cut our trip short and go back home on Sunday rather than our original plan departure date of Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2016.

My name is John Manna. Date: July 6, 2016, My wife and I had a confirmation number for a prepaid vehicle, to be picked up in Philadelphia. Our flights from Atlanta and West Palm Beach were delayed due to weather. I first called Dollar Rent A Car customer service from West Palm, on July 6 am, to inform we would be delayed and wanted to make certain our rental agreement would be ok. I was told everything is ok. I then called again from Atlanta, approximately 7:30 pm, and explained that we would arrive 4:30 am July 7, due to continued weather delays. I was told once again, everything is ok. Upon arrival, at Philly airport, 4:00 am, July 7, we called the Dollar shuttle, it di not arrive until 5:00 am, finally, when we reached the customer service counter, we were told that our confirmation has expired. I explained that I called twice today. The supervisor said, sorry, nothing I can do about it. He would not honor our prepaid $208.74 confirmation. Instead, he said we are now walk ins and would have to pay over $500 for a new rental agreement. We are 65 years old and got treated like crap. Tired and weary, we had no choice, at 5:30 am in the morning to take the car and go. My wife and I feel Dollar owes us an apology and a refund of the difference of the original confirmation. The staff at Philadelphia did not care nor did they wish to make it right. Common sense sometimes goes a long way. My phone number We wish to hear from someone who can make this happen. Worst service ever!! was charged for insurance and extra driver even though I opted out of insurance and my driver was already covered on my insurance. When I called to explain this to the customer service representative she became very belligerent and rude to say the least. I asked for another person or supervisor in which she informed me she is authorized to answer any questions I have and deal with all problems. I told her I didn't want to talk to her anymore please send me to someone else and she hung the phone up on me. I proceeded to call the customer service number and the instructed me to call back, gave me the prompts to hit and told me I should be reimbursed. I did as told and got the same lady who hung up on me again as soon as I started to explain. I was so mad I was in tears. I called the customer service number and finally got someone to help me and received the full refund I was entitled to. I do not understand how a company can allow behavior like this in their customer service department. The final lady I spoke with was very helpful and actually looked up the benefits of my insurance plan which clearly states I didn't have to pay for an additional driver. If I had not persisted we would have been billed an extra $120. in addition the company charged me for insurance even though I opted out when I placed to reservation and PAID IN FULL. The refunded this amount as well. I would avoid this company until some changes are made.

I reserved a car at Dollar Rent a Car on May 6th 2016 in Panama City Beach Florida.When we got to the Rental counter they said they were out of cars and all the cars were in the shop being repaired. I had got a very good rate when I reserved the car on line and now I know why. Other Rentals car booths at the airport all said this happens all the time with Dollar. I will never rent or reserve a car from Dollar again. The people at the counter were rude and not helpful at all. Never never never again!!!

I am very disappointed with Dollar over an incident during Thanksgiving holidays. Dollar makes it nearly impossible to dispute charges and their employees are rude.

I want to dispute a charge against me and I have been trying to go through the proper channels in your company to do so. However, I have unfortunately been met with some rude and unhelpful customer service from some of your employees starting from telephone reps all the way up to your corporate dispute department.

I am disputing a charge of $243.75 for a Loss Damage Waiver that I did not agree to. We rented a car from Dollar on Nov 21, 2015 from the Atlanta airport and returned it on Nov 28, 2015. It was prepaid, however, the employee told us there was going to be a deposit of $278.56 and that it would be returned after the car was returned, barring there was no damage. We understood because we have rented dozens of cars and that is just standard procedure. The employee went through all the additional products that can be added onto car rentals like additional insurance, loss/damage waiver, fuel, etc. Myself along with my girlfriend and friend, clearly said NO to all these additional charges. Your employee printed the agreement, I signed, and away we went. We returned the vehicle the following Saturday without any issues/damage and flew home to Florida.

I called Dollar on Dec 2 because I noticed that the deposit hadn't been credited back to my account. I called and Dollar told me it could take 3-5 business days. Therefore, hopefully by Friday Dec 4, the deposit of $278.56 would be credited back into my account. On Friday Dec 4, I noticed the deposit had not been given back so I called Dollar again. I talked to Shaniqua' from corporate and she said that I had agreed to the Loss/Damage Waiver and there was nothing Dollar could do about it because of your policies. I tried to explain to her our situation that I stated above but she kept cutting me off and eventually hung up the phone.

I tried calling back throughout the day at work, but could not get through. I eventually got through to a Dollar employee again and it was Shaniqua' from corporate who apparently dealt with disputes. Again, I tried to explain what had happened and that it was just an honest mistake by the Dollar employee. It was Thanksgiving, it was busy, there were 50 agitated, tired people behind us waiting in line, we were all in a rush, and it was a simple, human mistake. Your corporate employee kept repeating to me that it was Dollar policy and that there was no way that I could get refunded the $243.56.

I asked to speak to someone else and she emphatically said no. She said there was no one else to talk to and that my case was closed. She hung up the phone on me a second time.

I understand policies, I understand where Shaniqua is coming from. I'm an educated person with 3 degrees, my girlfriend has 3 degrees, and we both have highly regarded careers. We travel a lot and we rent cars frequently. I have rented cars from Dollar for many years and have always been satisfied with the products and service your company provides until now. We have informed our friends and family and our inner circle is large and contains many highly ranked individuals. My soon-to-be father-in-law runs the University of South Florida and he has been informed about our issue with Dollar. He has told me that USF rents many vehicles and they do quite a bit of business with Dollar. Returning my $243 pales in comparison to the potential loss of revenue that Dollar will lose from us, our friends and family, and business connections with Dollar. I don't want to get any of your employees in trouble. I just want what is right and that is Dollar returning my $243 from an add-on that I did not agree to. The $243 is more than we paid for the week rental of the car!!
