I love your new store in the Heights. We've left Kroger and Whole Foods because your people are usually awesome and your stores are well organized and sharp.

But sadly, this evening, 6:10 Saturday April 11th, I tried to avoid the crowds by using the self service line. I had one item. The young lady pointed me to a kiosk and said "You can use that one, Boss Man," indicating one that would allow for social distancing. Boss Man has always seemed weird to me, but I was just getting some bacon and I was leaving quickly. No big deal.

I did the transaction, but neglected to complete it, I forgot to approve the amount. So I started to leave before I'd completed the last step - or at least I was about to. I didn't make it.

"Boss man, boss man...you need to finish your transaction!" I was sort of stunned. That slang might be acceptable on the street, But the young lady, who was very attentive to all the transactions didn't seem to have any problem with it...I mean, MAYBE the one time when she was directing me to a kiosk - but certainly not multiple times. It sounds very trashy...But she wasn't done.

As I stood there trying to figure out if she was trying to be casual, irreverent or she was just not particularly aware of my surprise, she said it again, "Seriously boss man, if you leave it uncompleted, I'll get fired. Please boss man, please...boss man..." she hit me with the triple boss man!

I went back hit the approved button for the one item, said "My name isn't boss man" and she smirked, "See, that wasn't THAT hard."

She may not be completely familiar with the origin of that phrase, was obviously not aware of my discomfort with it being used in a setting that, while definitely not requiring forms of formal address, certainly "Boss Man" is inappropriate...isn't it? Or am I just completely nuts.

She CLEARLY had no idea, cuz she used it again and again and again.

It was truly one of the weirder and more unpleasant moments of my grocery shopping experience. But I got my Jalapeño bacon.

Boss Man? Wow. Just thought I'd let you know. It's not a great reflection on your fine company.
