Last night I visited the Office Depot in Durango Colorado and had a very frustrating experience. I am a teacher that works in New Mexico, but lives in Colorado. I went into the store last night to purchase an ink cartrige for the copier in my classroom. When I got to the register and gave the clerk our school credit card with the tax exempt number used for Office Depot. When the clerk typed in the number, it would not work. After calling the manager to help, they suggested that since my school was in another state, that the card would not work in Colorado. Instead, they suggested that I drive to thier store in Farmington New Mexico, an addtional 20 minutes away from where I work to buy the cartrige at that store. I already have to commute 40 minutes each way everyday and adding another 40 minutes by driving in the wrong direction was not on my list of fun things to do, in addition to the 60-70 hours a week I spend at my job. No effort was ever made to contact the Farmington store to get the number and each of the employees gave me a "that's just the way it is" approach to helping me. I spoke with our office manager who told me that the tax exempt form for the Durango store has been filled out several times and teachers continue to have the same problem. I'm sure that there are other teachers who live near state lines in other parts of the country and try to do their supply shopping near home. Office Depot needs to come up with a better system than this.
